THE PROBLEMS:
(1) Balancing the future low-carbon electrical grid. In the summer of 2023, I worked for 3 months at Statera Energy, a renewable energy start-up that aims to solve mismatches in the supply and demand of renewable energy by designing engineering solutions that temporarily store renewable energy for future consumption.
(2) Making spaceports interoperable. In the summer of 2024, I worked for 3 months at SpaceDreamS, a space start-up that aims to provide flexible spaceport services to satellite launchers. Up until now, spaceports have been designed as costly infrastructures that are customized for each launcher. SpaceDreamS is exploring novel interoperable designs and corresponding novel business model, that of a ground service segment provider.
THE PROJECTS:
(1) At Statera, I contributed to the planning and operation of new battery storage sites, providing support to decisions such as location, design and layout of battery storage sites, in collaboration with different stakeholders and engineering sub-contractors.
(2) At SpaceDreamS, I evaluated the technical and economic feasibility of novel spaceport concepts which the company considered developing. I performed demand analysis, competitive market analysis comparing rival offers from international competitors, and technical options analysis. The outcome of my mission helped guide future investment trajectories at SpaceDreams. In addition, I delivered several reports building on this original analysis that were commissioned to SpaceDreamS by the European Space Agency ESA and the French national space agency CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) and presented my results to them.
